Driving Measurable Improvement in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Physician Workforce

Formerly the Equity Matters™ Joint Capstone

CMSS is pleased to support a long-term initiative on Driving Measurable Improvement in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Physician Workforce (formerly the Equity Matters™ Joint Capstone). This initiative demonstrates a shared commitment as a CMSS community of medical specialty societies and program director associations to eliminate structural barriers in medical school admissions and support advancement along all career stages in the pathway for those underrepresented in medicine.

The long-term strategic goal for this initiative is to implement a national cross-specialty plan that:

  1. Increases the pool of diverse applicants to medical school and reduces barriers to entry
  2. Delivers best practices to increase the visibility and availability of effective mentorship, coaching, and sponsorship programs for those underrepresented in medicine who are in-training or practicing members of specialty societies.

The initiative includes 22 actively participating organizations, is co-led by volunteer leaders from member societies IDSA and AAPM&R, and is guided by an Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee provides high-level expertise, leadership, and strategic insight during the tenure of an effort focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine and countering structural racism.

Current Projects:

  • CMSS is distributing a Survey to all CMSS and OPDA member organizations requesting baseline data on their current mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship programs. Please contact Ashlan Ruth (aruth@cmss.org) with any questions regarding the survey.
