CMSS Announces ENGAGE: Eliminating Bias in Next-Generation Algorithms: Guidance and Evaluation

June 23, 2026

Clinical algorithms shape diagnoses, treatments, and access to care for millions of patients. When those tools embed race in ways that aren’t evidence-based, the consequences for patient care are real — and fixable.

At the recent Encoding Health Equity Summit, CMSS announced ENGAGE: Eliminating Bias in Next-Generation Algorithms: Guidance and Evaluation, a $2.6 million initiative funded by the Doris Duke Foundation to unite the scientific, clinical, and publishing communities around modern methodologies for evaluating race in clinical equations.

ENGAGE builds on the Encoding Equity Alliance and extends this work into clinical research and translational science alongside several important project collaborators. We look forward to sharing more updates and opportunities for the CMSS community as our work continues.
