CMSS Policies & Position Statements

CMSS may use its stature to influence the medical community and policy makers on issues of importance to members, including protection of core society functions (e.g., education, guidelines, publishing, quality, and equity) and overarching issues of importance to professionalism and the nation’s public health.

Key pillars of CMSS policy-making approach:

  • CMSS policy and position statements reflect CMSS as an organization of organizations
  • CMSS statements do not necessarily reflect the position of individual CMSS member organizations
  • The CMSS Board is the policy-making body for CMSS and will seek member input to guide decision-making

Standard Operating Procedures:

  • Given these key pillars, CMSS will avoid position statements that request individual member signatories
  • Unless an issue requires urgent release, CMSS will share proposed statements for member input to cultivate broad-based approval
  • CMSS members may choose to amplify CMSS statements if aligned with society policy
  • For issues of significant import to societies, the CMSS Board may request sign-on from member societies only if sufficient time is provided for vetting by individual members (e.g., amicus briefs on core society functions)

About CMSS:

The Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) is a coalition of more than 50 specialty societies representing more than 800,000 physicians across the house of medicine. CMSS advances the expertise and collective voice of specialty societies and the patients they serve to drive meaningful change in the future of healthcare.
