The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Awards Grant to the Council of Medical Specialty Societies 2020

January 10, 2022

Chicago, IL (January 10, 2022) –

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation recently awarded a grant to the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS), a coalition of 47 specialty societies representing more than 800,000 physicians across healthcare, to promote diagnostic excellence across the field of medicine.

This two-year grant award includes $1.26 million in funding to develop, launch, and monitor a competitive grant program for up to 10 medical specialty societies to support the development of resources and programs focused on diagnostic excellence.

“Given the depth and breadth of our membership, CMSS can be a powerful lever to engage specialty societies in diagnostic excellence,” said Martha Liggett, CMSS President and Executive Director of the American Society of Hematology. “Our member societies look forward to building programs and resources that can meet the challenge of diagnostic safety and quality to further enhance patient care.”

Medical specialty societies are well-positioned to promote effective strategies to improve diagnostic excellence to their members through educational programs, including accredited CME, peer-reviewed journals, clinical guidelines, research, and clinical registries.

All CMSS member societies will be eligible to apply to the competitive grant program through a Call for Proposals. An external advisory committee will review the applications. The Call for Proposals is expected to launch on March 1, 2022.

“Physicians look to their specialty societies for programs and resources that shape practice and drive improvement,” said Helen Burstin, MD, MPH, MACP, CEO of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. “We are very pleased to promote effective strategies to engage physicians in diagnostic excellence across the house of medicine.”

In addition to the selection and provision of grants to individual societies, CMSS will serve as a coordinating center to monitor and promote cross-specialty learning, improvement, collaboration, and identification of best practices in diagnostic excellence that can be shared with the broader medical community.
