Executive Vice President & CEO’s Message

As I wrap-up my first year as your EVP & CEO, I want to thank you for this remarkable opportunity to re-envision CMSS’s future with you.  Our strategic plan includes new mission and priorities to help CMSS move to the next level of service and impact.  Our new 3-part mission includes: 1) support and strengthen member organizations to address future challenges; 2) catalyze improvement through convening, collaboration, collective voice, and action across specialties; and 3) provide a proactive platform to assess and address emerging and critical issues across specialty societies that will influence the future of healthcare and the patients we serve.  We are working with the CMSS Board to launch new 2019 work within our priorities of quality, education and professional identity. A few time-sensitive updates:

Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission Report.  The Vision Commission’s report on the future of continuing certification has been released for public comment.  The report includes the Commission’s key findings and recommendations. CMSS will submit a joint response on behalf of the specialty societies. Please encourage your members to submit public comments. Comments must be submitted by Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019.

CMSS Task Forces: In addition to our current Task Force on Physician Burnout, CMSS is launching two new task forces.  They are both in the early planning phases.  Please let me know if you would like to be engaged in these efforts:

  1. CMSS Task Force on Equity in Physician Compensation and Career Advancement.  The task force is charged with identifying and sharing best practices for specialty societies to track and improve diversity and inclusion of women and minorities, including best practices for assessing differences in physician compensation through standardized surveys and analytics.
  2. CMSS Task Force on Conflict of Interest / Disclosure Harmonization: This new task force, led by the new CMSS Publishing Component Group, along with General Counsels, CPD and CPG component groups.

2019 CMSS Meetings: Thank you for joining us in November for our summit on the future of physician learning and improvement.  Please join us on May 9, 2019 in Chicago for the CMSS Annual Summit on the Future of Clinical Registries.  It will be followed by our one-day annual meeting on Friday, May 10.  Please save the dates and join us!

I’m delighted to be part of the specialty society community. I look forward to working with you in the new year.  Best wishes for the holidays!
